Like the soldiers of the Civil War most our lives at reenactments are spent in camp, and it is here where almost all spectator interaction takes place.  Because of this The Orphan Boys Mess strives to maintain an accurate military setup at each event, one which shows the living conditions of a western Confederate infantry unit on the march, while also addressing the comfort concerns of the reenactors.

Unfortunately it doesn’t take much to ruin this image, which is why The Orphan Boys Mess now has a policy regarding modern items in camp during spectator visiting hours.  This policy: KEEP IT HIDDEN.  Spotting modern day items seems to be an unofficial contest for spectators, one which they are remarkably good at.

Thankfully this ban on modern day items while in camp isn’t as daunting as it may sound, and in fact, can be nice once one slips back into the role of the Civil War era soldier.  It is also fun to see the expressions on the spectators faces when they see us living the way we do and to hear questions like IS THAT A REAL FIRE?
